Have you had a busy day today and your belly is ki Have you had a busy day today and your belly is kicking back with IBS symptoms?

My clinical massage research recently has been centred around the impact of stress on IBS and how advanced bodywork techniques such as myofascial release, can help to ease the symptoms of such mind-body disorders.

The vagus nerve, as the primary communicator between the gut and the brain, is a key component of the IBS story. Along with practices such as massage and yoga, breathwork can help to tone the vagus nerve and settle the nervous system. This in turn has a calming effect on a disrupted gut. And the great news is you can do it anytime anywhere.

Try taking a couple of minutes out of your day to sit, in nature if at all possible, simply inviting the breath into your hands. Feel the belly come to your hands as you inhale and then slowly move away from your palms as you exhale. Try the same but breathing into your back body, and then again into your sides. A few minutes is all it takes to feel more grounded, settled and connected with the world around you.

So why not give it a go right now if you can! It might just be the mini remedy you needed. 🌱🧘🏻‍♀️ 🙏

Do you feel like you need a full body servicing? ⚙️🔨⛽️👩🏻‍🔧

Do you have multiple issues throughout your body? Such as back pain, an achy shoulder, a dodgy ankle, sciatica, migraines, fatigue… Are you getting frustrated with trying to treat them all independently and getting nowhere?😩 Maybe a new approach is needed! 💡

Fascial integration aims to connect the dots in your symptoms by synthesising the continuity of muscles and their surrounding connective tissues (fascia). Over the course of four extensive treatments, you will systematically be treated from head to toe with manual therapy aimed at fine-tuning the entire body. This will create an environment for your body and nervous system to more easily find homeostasis.

🔹Treatment one: Thorough consultation and assessment, followed by a grounding treatment to calm the central nervous system (CNS).
🔸Treatment two: Balancing the legs; working from the plantar fascia of the feet we travel up the ankle, achilles tendon, calves and hamstrings, back down through the quads, knees and shins, and then down through the ITB and peroneals.
🔹Treatment three: Balancing the pelvis and ribcage; working into the frontal hip muscles and hip flexors, through the abdominals, obliques, sternum, pectorials, then down the spine and around the sacrum, into the gluteals and hip rotators, around the whole of the hip joint, the outer hip muscles, finishing with the QL and lats.
🔸Treatment Four: Balancing the head & neck and full integration; working into the anterior and lateral neck muscles, the posterior neck and releasing under the base of the skull, finish with full neck and back integration, including trapezius release.

If you would like to discuss with me whether you think this treatment approach would be right for you, then please feel free to DM me or email on oceanflowfitness@gmail.com. Please share this post with someone who you believe will benefit from it.

So, I’ve got a shiny new manual therapist qualif So, I’ve got a shiny new manual therapist qualification. I’m now an 👩🏻‍⚕️Advanced Myofascial Release Practitioner 💕 ‘Very posh’ I hear you say, ‘but what on Earth does that mean?’😅Let me try and summarise…

Myo = muscle, in anatomy talk
Fascia = the extracellular matrix of connective tissue that interpenetrates, supports & surrounds every structure in the body.
(Therefore) Myofascial = the continuity of the muscles and surrounding connective tissues in the body that form organised tensegrity pathways, to help us stand and move with grace.

Still confused? Well, to expand, the treatment approaches I use are:

❤️Indirect Fascial Release: includes a range of very soft & subtle techniques grounded in listening touch and drawing on inspiration from schools of bodywork such as Cranial-Sacral Therapy and Visceral Manipluation. The aim of much of the indirect work is to calm the nervous system and release deep-held physical and emotional traumas.

This work is extremely effective in the treatment of systemic conditions such as Chronic Fatigue, IBS, Fibromyalgia, PTSD, Asthma, Depression, and Rheumatoid arthritis. It will always be client-centred and lead, with a safe space being held by the therapist to allow the client to fascially unwind.

❤️Direct Fascial Release: More targeted techniques to work with specific areas of pain or to rebalance the whole structure and postural deviations. The patient applies specified gentle movement, whilst the therapist works on a targeted myofascial area. This brings a deep release of aches and pains that other manual techniques very often can’t reach.

This work is very powerful in treating most general musculoskeletal pathologies and is particularly useful when other, more traditional, physiotherapy approaches haven’t worked. Our belief that pain is always down to something happening on a musculoskeletal level is somewhat erroneous. Sometimes the issue can be in the tissues, or the pain can be in the brain. Fascial work, therefore, bridges this gap that other therapies might be missing out, by freeing up these structures and their neural pathways.

Although I may be looking somewhat unimpressed by Although I may be looking somewhat unimpressed by being electrical taped from head to toe 😂, this exercise @jingmassage last week does demonstrate an impressive point: that everything is interconnected via our fascial system.

Here we were playing around with tracing the myofascial superficial front line and back line according to @anatomytrainsofficial

Notice for example how restrictions in the front of the neck and jaw can translate to restrictions in the chest, diaphragm, and all the way into the pelvic floor (or the same is true of this fascial line in reverse). This is why it’s important in a clinical practice to not only treat the site of pain, but to consider the continuity of our organism as a whole, as well as the person that inhabits that body.

Have you been trying to stretch your IT band, foam Have you been trying to stretch your IT band, foam roller it out, or pummel it into remission with a massage gun 😣 Firstly, ouch! And secondly, I’m afraid you’ve been barking up the wrong tree (or leg) 🦵

The iliotibial band, ITB, is a thick band of extremely strong connective tissue running down along the lateral thigh. Its main functions are pelvic stabilisation and posture control, hence why strength not mobility are key.

The ratio of considerably more collagen fibres to elastin, means that the IT band does not have the ability to stretch and shift like a muscle.

To release the ITB, focus your attention on the muscles that feed into it, namely the Glute Max and Med and the TFL on the anterolateral part of the hip. Slowly sinking into these structures with a tennis ball and holding and waiting for a release, will be far more effective than trying to work directly on the ITB itself.

If you’re having any lateral hip or knee issues and you feel like you would benefit from some soft tissue release and tailored self help exercises, then feel free to DM me for more information on my Advanced Clinical Massage Therapy.

I’ll look forward to hearing from you.
